Washington, D.C. – The American Academy of Diplomacy is proud to announce that this year's winner of the Douglas Dillon Book Award for a Book of Distinction on the Practice of American Diplomacy is Negotiating the New START Treaty by Rose Gottemoeller, who served as chief U.S. negotiator.
In clear, jargon-free prose, leavened with humor, Gottemoeller conveys both the facts and the flavor of an intense, high-stakes negotiation. She covers not only US-Russian negotiations, but also building an effective inter-agency team, relations between the negotiators and the White House and - not least - mobilizing American public and Congressional opinion for ratification of the Treaty. The book is a highly enjoyable as well as useful master class in American diplomacy at its best.
